They're a ***** and a half to get gathering Peasant women and making sure they don't die in their first engagement when they're still Camp Follower-ish level is highly annoying.
But more recently, I've started to use sword sisters. I tend to have a combined arms force of multiple nations - Nord warriors to soak up damage for my Marksmen and Sharpshooter force, with Swadian/Vaegir calvalry to lead a flanking assault - pretty standard fare stuff, but ridiculously effective.
This kind of occurred to me in my most recent playthrough.
